The song on the album, "They Fucked Our Asses", predates the writing of the album, and was written and performed in the 1990s at live concerts. The band also performed it at concerts in the early 2000s, but with a cover of Radiohead's "Airbag", which it faded into.

The album was recorded in 2008 to 2012. Unlike the first two studio albums, there was no subsequent documentary released of them recording the album.

General Release:

The album was released on the 15th May 2012, a few days prior to the start of the Rize of the Fenix Tour. There was a competition via Kung Fu Nation, Tenacious D's official merchandise store, whereby entertains could win a test pressing of the vinyl.

If the album was pre-ordered on iTunes, the bonus track "5 Needs" would be downloaded. The "5 Needs" track also appears on a promotional CD for the album.

Clean Version:

A clean version of the album was released on CD at the same time as the explicit CD. This version is almost the exact same as the regular release, however the swears are replaced with funnier words. Unlike the clean version for The Pick of Destiny, this clean version has its own dedicated artwork. The clean version is also available on select digital stores, excluding iTunes.

  • The success of the album prompted the band to release the Jazz extended play in the fall of the year to support 2012 Record Store Day.
